Course (in-yard) driving test guide (Class 1 / Class 2 Ordinary)
The course test (장내기능시험) is taken on a course inside the test site. It checks how you operate the controls, drive by the traffic rules, and notice and judge situations (Road Traffic Act Enforcement Decree Article 48(1)). Class 1 and Class 2 Ordinary applicants who pass it get a learner’s permit (연습운전면허) and then take the on-road test. The deductions and pass rules below follow Enforcement Rule Annex 24 item 2 (Class 1 / Class 2 Ordinary learner’s permit), and the course follows Annex 23 item 1-2 (Enforcement Rule in force 2026-08-24, checked 2026-10-20).
Pass: 80 or more out of 100
Order and course
- Controls check — before starting, follow the examiner’s or the car’s voice instructions to operate some, chosen at random, of: gear shift, headlights, turn signals, wipers.
- Start — check front, back, left and right, turn on the left turn signal, move to the middle of the lane, then turn the signal off.
- Hill (slope) — stop in the uphill stop zone for at least 3 seconds, then move off without rolling back 50 cm or more.
- Right-angle parking — drive in forwards, reverse into the bay until the rear wheels touch the check line, apply and release the parking brake, then drive out forwards. Do not touch the sensor lines or leave the bay lines, and finish within 120 seconds.
- Signalled intersection — go straight or turn as the lights show (at least one pass, including a left turn). Use the turn signal when turning.
- Acceleration section — on the straight, reach 20 km/h or more (manual cars shift to 2nd or 3rd, then slow down and shift down before the end).
- Sudden hazard — when the hazard light comes on, stop within 2 seconds, turn on the hazard lights within 3 seconds, and turn them off when you move off.
- Finish — check around you, turn on the right turn signal and stop at the right side of the road.
The sections are joined by at least 300 m of paved road at least 7 m wide (two or more 3 m lanes). While driving at under 20 km/h you are also checked for staying in lane, keeping the engine running (under 4,000 rpm) and wearing your seat belt. The order of sections can differ between test sites (Annex 23 item 1-2, note 2).

| H) Turn signal at start and finish | 5 | No turn signal when starting or when finishing |
| I) Keeping the engine running | 5 | Each time the engine stalls, each time it reaches 4,000 rpm or more, or (electric cars) each time pressing the accelerator too hard sets off the safety brake |

Source: Enforcement Rule Annex 24 item 2 A 1)–2) (amended 2026-02-24)
Time limit = course length ÷ 15 km/h + 20 seconds each for the hill and the sudden hazard (40 seconds) + 120 seconds for parking + 300 seconds for the controls check. Time spent waiting at signals is not counted (Annex 23 item 1-2, note 6 C).
Pass mark and instant fail
You pass with 80 or more out of 100 after deductions. Whatever your score, you fail at once if any of these happens (Annex 24 item 2 B):
- You do not wear your seat belt from the start to the end of the test.
- You cause an accident during the test, or any wheel touches the kerb.
- You do not follow the examiner’s instructions or control, or alcohol, fatigue, or drugs such as narcotics or cannabis make it hard to run the test normally.
- You do not start from the start line within 30 seconds of being told to, without a special reason.
- You skip or do not properly complete any course section — for example, you pass the hill without stopping, do not touch the check line in the parking bay, or do not shift gear in the acceleration section.
- You do not get past the hill within 30 seconds after the stop, or roll back 1 m or more in the hill stop zone.
- You run a red light at the signalled intersection, or your front bumper goes past the stop line.
Pass marks for other licences: Class 1 Large 80 (Annex 24 item 1), Class 2 Small and motorised bicycle 90 (item 3), Special licences 90 (item 4).
Steps (also for foreigners)
- When you pass the written test, you are told the date and place of the course test (Enforcement Rule Article 64(2)). Registration, what to bring, and KoROAD’s rule that you must pass the course test within one year of passing the written test are on the written test guide.
- Scoring is electronic (Decree Article 48(3), Rule Article 66(2)). Before the test, the examiner must explain how it runs and what causes an instant fail (Rule Article 69(2)1).
- Test vehicles must meet size rules (length, width, wheelbase, turning radius): a van/bus or truck for the Class 1 Ordinary learner’s permit; a standard or car-type passenger car, or a car-like van-type truck of 3 tonnes or less, for the Class 2 Ordinary learner’s permit. If the car you bring meets the rules, you may use it (Rule Article 70(1) items 2 and 7, and 70(2)).
- If you fail, you can take it again after three days have passed from the day you failed (Decree Article 48(5)).
- When you pass, you get a learner’s permit (valid for one year, Road Traffic Act Article 81) and prepare for the on-road test.
Test fees and site schedules are set by KoROAD, not by law. Ask the KoROAD call centre (1577-1120) or see KoROAD’s licence procedure page.
